As a company who hires quality employees, you are looking for the best
benefits package for those employees. We also know
that, in these times, it has become harder for you the employer to be
able to provide these benefits to your employees. Many
employers are now moving towards voluntary/employee paid
benefits. Statistics show even though the employee is paying
for the benefit, having it offered means something to them.
Voluntary/employee paid benefits have been around for over 20 years,
but not till recently have they become more popular. As the
employer, all you have to do is allow us time to offer these benefits
to your employees. Depending on the product, we
would either do group presentations and take care of 25 to 30 employees
at a time or some products are best if done on a one on one basis.
Short Term Disability – Short term disability is
so valuable that I would rate if right behind your medical
plan! Most of us insure our homes, cars, health,
eyes and teeth, but we forget to insure the income that provides the
above items. Most plans are based on either a flat rate or
60% of their gross income up to a maximum per week.
Also most plans offer a variety of options for when the benefits would
begin. For example, a 0/7/26 plan would start paying benefits
for a covered accident the first day the employee is out and start on
the 8th day paying for a covered sickness or surgery up to 26 weeks per
year. There are other options available.
Most employees these days do not have a “nest egg”
to pull from if they are out of work for a week or more.
(Some not even for a few days!) Statistics show 4 in 10 U.S.
workers often or always live paycheck to paycheck (Careerbuilders.com
Survey 2007); disability causes nearly 50% of all mortgage
foreclosures, compared to 2% caused by death (Health Affairs Feb 2,
2005) and half of all personal U.S. bankruptcies, affecting 2 million
people annually, were attributable to illness or medical
bills (MarketWatch Feb 2, 2005)
More than 80% of working Americans don’t have disability
income insurance or aren’t covered adequately. (National
Underwriter magazine May 2001)
